Our speaker this month will be Ryan Frisinger. Ryan is an interdisciplinary specialist operating at the intersections of medicine and culture. His major research project is the interaction between genetics, biotechnology, medicine, culture and the humanities. With an emphasis on biohacking, Ryan designs custom health programs that address genetic weaknesses, nutritional deficiencies, emotional traumas, and infectious/environmental pathologies. By transforming advanced multidisciplinary research into potent health-restoring programs, he provides individuals with an operating manual for their unique body. Ryan’s broader work encourages a better understanding and articulation of scientific knowledge and informed critique of the ethical and cultural issues surrounding medical interventions and the practice of medicine.
Ryan’s talk will examine the intersection of various practices of medicine and technoscience with human bodies and lives through an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing in particular on the ways in which the practices of medical, technological, and scientific institutions function in the modern world. Biopolitics is a complicated concept that has been used and developed in critical theory since Michel Foucault to examine the strategies and mechanisms through which human life processes are managed under regimes of authority over knowledge, power, and the processes of subjectivation. In his talk, Ryan will attempt to pull out the foundational underpinnings upon which Foucault rests to begin to develop a theory of biopolitics & biohacking. Paying attention to the historicizing treatment Foucault gives to a notion of power in relation to the rise of biopolitics, he will ultimately reflect upon present-day phenomena like CRISPR gene editing and big data in medical science which signal the movement and transformation of biopolitics into new forms and trajectories.
