On Tuesday November 10, 7PM, at FUTO (2410 San Antonio) the Austin Science Network and EFF-Austin present Neurocomputing 2026: the Map and the Territory.

TALK SUMMARY

Neurocomputing integrates generations of developments from two different domains: experimental and theoretical neuroscience, and computer science and engineering. Problem-solving over the decades has led to computational models and AI systems inspired by the brain’s neural architecture and dynamics, including artificial neural networks, brain-inspired algorithms, and more recently, neurosymbolic AI. Applications include machine learning, computational neuroscience models, brain-computer interface (BCI) systems, microprocessor architectures, and neuromorphic computing. Join us for a discussion on theories and applications across disciplinary borders with David DeMaris, PhD, Owen McNally, PhD and Zoltan Nadasdy, PhD.

The event is open to the public, and participants are invited to a nearby social visit afterwards.

BIOS

David DeMaris holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. His research spans computational neuroscience, nonlinear dynamics, machine learning, microprocessor design software, computational lithography, and remains active in Austin’s arts and music scenes.

Owen McNally earned an interdisciplinary Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin focused on medical cognitive science and neurophenomenology. He is founder of the Austin Science Network, joins or builds teams for user-centered software development, researches cybersecurity for healthcare, and is a professor teaching biopsychology, human growth and development, and clinical/abnormal psychology using evolutionary and genetic models.

Zoltan Nadasdy received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Rutgers University followed by postdoctoral research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Caltech. He is adjunct faculty in Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, holds a faculty position at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, and serves as Principal Neuroscientist at Zeto, Inc. His research centers on neural coding (especially phase and gamma coding), spatial cognition, time perception, EEG engineering, and human intracranial electrophysiology.

PARTNERS

Austin Science Network (ASN) brings together scientists, technologists, researchers, and community members for sense-making and deep-dives into physics, cognitive neuroscience, AI, medicine, longevity, cybersecurity, renewable energy systems, genetics, and evolution; learn more at www.austinsciencenetwork.com

HOW TO ATTEND

Our meetup is at FUTO Open Repair Workshop, 2410 San Antonio St, Austin, TX 78705.

When you arrive, you go through the center door facing the street and up the stairs. We are in the big event hall on the 2nd floor.

There a few free parking spaces in front of the building, as well as metered street parking. There is also a UT Garage, San Antonio Garage, right next door, where parking is $3/hr.
